The record places this photograph on May 3, 1913, in New York City, during a suffrage parade, a form of public demonstration that the women's suffrage movement used to make its case in the streets rather than only in meeting halls. Marches like this one drew women from many walks of life, and they carried banners and wore sashes in movement colors to show their numbers to onlookers and to lawmakers. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of news photographs that Bain, a working press photographer, sold to newspapers, so it was taken to document a news event as it happened.
