Troops of the Moscow garrison march across Red Square in this May Day parade from 1960, a print credited to N. Granovsky of the Soviet news agency TASS. May Day, the international workers' holiday, was one of the most important dates on the Soviet calendar, and its parades let the state show its military strength and discipline before the Kremlin and Lenin's Mausoleum. The photograph captures the ceremonial side of Soviet public life in the Khrushchev years, when such displays were carefully staged for domestic and foreign audiences. The details here come from a caption card and have not been independently verified.
