The title, "Be it ever so humble," borrows the opening line of the sentimental song "Home, Sweet Home," which places a modest dwelling in the hill town of Cayey, in the mountainous interior of Puerto Rico. The card dates to about 1899, the year after the United States took control of the island under the Treaty of Paris that ended the Spanish-American War. Stereographs like this one, made in pairs to be seen through a viewer, were a popular way for American audiences to see distant places, and this card reflects that appetite for scenes of daily life in newly acquired territory.
