Caguas, an inland town in the central highlands of Puerto Rico, is the setting for this stereograph of its commercial district, a scene that sets it apart from the coastal port views more often seen from the period. Underwood & Underwood of New York published the card around 1900, when the firm produced stereo views by the thousands for home parlor viewers. The island had come under American control after the Spanish-American War of 1898, and views of its towns were made for American audiences curious about their new territory. The card offers a close look at storefronts, streets and everyday commerce during that period of change.
