Few barrooms in New York were as talked about as the one at the Hoffman House, the hotel on Madison Square at Broadway and 25th Street. This 1890 view shows the interior, where a long bar and ornate fittings served a well-to-do crowd of politicians, businessmen and theatergoers. The room's best-known feature was Adolphe Bouguereau's large painting *Nymphs and Satyr*, which hung above the bar and became part of the hotel's reputation. The print's copyright notation shows it was registered for publication, which makes it a useful record of how the room looked to the public.
