The New Iron Pier, pictured from inside and looking out toward the ocean, was one of the seaside promenades that drew crowds to Coney Island in the late 1870s. Such piers ran out over the surf so visitors could stroll and take in the sea air without leaving the resort's amusements behind. William B. Holmes published this cabinet card in 1879 as part of his Coney Island Views series, a souvenir format that let visitors carry the shore home with them.
