Few hotels in New York were as well known in 1846 as the Astor House, John Jacob Astor's establishment on Broadway near City Hall Park, and this print shows a parade car from Van Amburgh & Co. passing its front. Isaac Van Amburgh, the animal trainer whose act with lions made him a national celebrity, used such processions to draw crowds to his shows. Currier issued the scene as a hand-colored lithograph, a common way to sell topical street views to a broad public in the 1840s. It records how circus spectacle and city streets mixed in antebellum New York.
