The title dates this view to April 15, 1906, three days before the earthquake and fire that devastated San Francisco. The Palace Hotel, built in 1875 by banker William Ralston on Market Street, was one of the city's most lavish hotels, and its grand public rooms drew visitors from across the country. The Pillsbury Picture Co., a local firm, issued the print as a numbered view, so it records the hotel and the city's street life just before the disaster. The hotel was largely destroyed by fire within days.
