Few buildings in Antigua Guatemala carry as much of its colonial history as the Palace of the Captains General, which served as the seat of Spanish colonial government for the Captaincy General of Guatemala. The city was the regional capital until earthquakes in 1773 led officials to move to a new site, and the ruins and surviving structures of Antigua's old administrative core remain among its best-known landmarks. This print comes from a series of views issued by the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C., which circulated images of Latin American architecture in the 1930s to encourage cultural ties across the hemisphere.
