Schiller's statue stands in Stuttgart, and the photograph frames it against the palace grounds and the trees around the square. Friedrich Schiller, the poet and playwright born in 1759, spent his formative school years in Stuttgart at the Karlsschule, the military academy of Duke Charles Eugene, and the city later honored him with this monument. Photographs like this one, mounted in albums of European travel views made between about 1860 and 1890, were often bought as souvenirs of cities with literary or historical associations. The albumen print process of the period gives the stonework and foliage a soft tonal range that shows the scale of the open space.
