Pale fragments of the bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica lie stacked in the inner courtyard of the Doge's Palace, the one detail that sets this view apart from other pictures of the palace. The campanile, which had stood for centuries beside the cathedral, collapsed without warning on July 14, 1902, and workers carried the salvageable stone into the palace yard, where it could be sorted and kept. Weeks later, when this photograph was taken, the rubble was still being sorted, and the pieces would later help guide the tower's reconstruction, which was completed and reopened in 1912.
