This view looks across the Great Court at Baalbek, the Roman religious complex in the Bekaa Valley of present-day Lebanon, where the rows of stone columns and open paving are the features that set it apart. The site was built under Roman rule, when the city was known as Heliopolis, and its monumental temples drew travelers and archaeologists throughout the 19th century. The photograph was made by Bonfils, the Beirut studio that sold views of the Levant to tourists and collectors, and the number "191" written on the image suggests it was part of a numbered series. The album label "Constantinople" indicates that prints like this one were often gathered into albums of Ottoman and Eastern Mediterranean scenes.
