Among the views in this album of German and European cities, this one shows a palace in Dresden named for Prince Albert, a member of the Saxon royal family. The photograph records the building's main facade as it stood in the decades when albumen prints were the standard medium for travel views. Albums like this one, with views of Prague, Munich, Nuremberg, and Berlin, were often assembled by travelers or collectors who wanted a record of the cities they visited. Dresden's historic core, including many of its palaces, was severely damaged in the bombing of February 1945, so images like this one now preserve how the architecture looked before that loss.
