Rather than a family posed in a parlor, this photograph shows a painted family group on a wall of the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building, recorded around 1898 under the simple title "Family." The building had opened only a year earlier, in 1897, and its interior was filled with murals and sculpture meant to convey ideas about learning, civic life and human progress. The print carries a Curtis and Cameron copyright, which suggests it was made for sale, and firms like theirs helped put images of new public buildings and their art in front of people who could not visit in person.
