Few presidential homes carry as much of a frontier story as this one, which the record identifies as Springfield, the home of Zachary Taylor. Taylor spent much of his early life in Kentucky, and his family's estate there shaped the Southern planter world he later represented as a career Army officer. He went on to become the 12th president of the United States in 1849, serving only about sixteen months before he died in office in 1850. The photograph's record gives no date or photographer, so its exact age is uncertain, but views of such family properties often were made to preserve sites tied to a prominent figure's life.
