The house on North Market Street in Canton, Ohio, was the home William McKinley shared with his wife, Ida, and it is the focus of this wood engraving, made in the years between 1897 and 1901 while he served as the country's twenty-fifth president. McKinley bought the residence in 1890 when he was still a congressman and returned to it often between Washington appointments, so the house became closely tied to his public image. Wood engravings like this one were widely reproduced in newspapers and magazines of the period, which helped spread views of presidential homes to readers who would never visit Ohio. The record gives no artist's name, so the print is best read as a document of how the public was invited to picture the president at home.
