Hermann Göring, in a bathrobe alongside Swedish guests on the porch of his country estate, offers an unusually casual view of the Nazi leader. Carinhall was named for his first wife, Carin, a Swedish-born woman who died in 1931, and it stood in the Schorfheide forest north of Berlin, where Göring built it as a hunting retreat during the 1930s. The album caption identifies the visitors as Swedish, a reminder of the personal ties that linked the estate to Sweden. The relaxed setting makes the picture useful for studying how regime leaders presented their private lives.
