Glasgow, the county seat of Barren County in south-central Kentucky, provides the setting, and the Graded School building is the subject of this view. Graded schools spread through American towns in the decades after the Civil War, when communities began sorting pupils into separate classrooms by age and ability instead of teaching them all in a single room. The photoprint was made by L.M. Rapp and belongs to the Wittemann Collection. Its caption card gives no date, so the year the picture was taken is unconfirmed.
