A ground floor plan of an imperial military middle school in Van, the lakeside city in eastern Anatolia, is the subject here, with its Ottoman Turkish and French captions showing that it was meant for official record-keeping. The sheet comes from an album of imperial schools that Abdul Hamid II's government compiled in the 1880s and early 1890s, when the sultan's administration expanded state education and military training across the empire. Such plans were prized as evidence of the government's modernizing ambitions. The Library of Congress holds the album within its Abdul-Hamid II Collection, which also preserves the student portraits that accompanied the drawings.
