Few cities in the Ottoman Empire carry as much early history as Bursa, the first Ottoman capital in the fourteenth century, and this albumen print records a military middle school there. The Ottoman Turkish and French caption identifies it as a rüşdiye, the middle-level school type the state expanded under Sultan Abdul-Hamid II, who ruled from 1876 to 1909. The picture comes from an album of imperial schools that paired building views with student portraits, a format that presented the empire's education as orderly and modern. Its number, 37, suggests it was one step in a deliberately arranged sequence.
