Set on the Bosphorus shore at Beşiktaş, this view shows the Imperial Military Middle School, one of the institutions that trained young men for the Ottoman army in the years before 1893. The photographer, Föbus, captioned it in both Ottoman Turkish and French, and it appears as number 6 in an album of military schools and students that later became part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress. Albums like this one were assembled during Abdul Hamid II's reign, when the state was expanding its military and technical schooling, so the pictures document both the buildings and the program behind them.
