Greenhouses and a cultivated garden stand at the center of this view of the botanical grounds of the Imperial Military Medical School in Istanbul. Plants like these were useful for teaching pharmacology and herbal medicine, which were central to training military doctors in the Ottoman Empire. The print is one of the views in an album of military schools assembled during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, who invested heavily in modern education and institutions. The French and Ottoman Turkish captions reflect the bilingual character of such official albums, which were meant to present the empire's reforms to both domestic and foreign audiences.
