Few pictures in this gallery show the layout of a school rather than its students or exterior, and this one records the ground floor of an imperial military middle school in Ṣan'ā', the Yemeni city then under Ottoman administration. It is an albumen print, captioned in Ottoman Turkish and French and numbered 10 in an album of imperial school plans and student portraits. The album belongs to the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress. Sultan Abdul-Hamid II (reigned 1876–1909) promoted state schooling as part of a wider effort to build loyalty and modern administration across the empire's provinces, and plans like this one show how such buildings were arranged for instruction and daily routine.
