Few pictures in this collection show schoolchildren outdoors, and this one stands out for its label, which names the 5th Division and a school group on an outing along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in Washington, D.C. The canal's towpath was a common route for walks and excursions in the late 1800s, when the waterway still carried barges between Georgetown and points west. The image is a cyanotype, a process that produces a distinctive blue print from sunlight exposure and was inexpensive enough for everyday documentary use. Its date of about 1899 places it near the end of the decade when the process was popular.
