A painting class at Central High School in Washington, D.C., is shown in this cyanotype, a blue-toned print made with a contact process that was inexpensive and popular in the 1890s. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the period's most accomplished women photographers, made the picture around 1899 for an album of the school. Johnston's documentary work often recorded students and teachers at ordinary tasks, which gives the scene its value as a view of classroom life at the turn of the century. Viewers may notice how the light falls across the room and how the students' attention is directed toward their work.
