The Brook Street Ragged and Industrial School, shown in this wood engraving from the *Illustrated London News* of December 17, 1853, belonged to a network of charities that took in poor and homeless London children. Such ragged schools offered basic lessons alongside training in trades, on the belief that work and discipline could keep young people out of crime. The caption card links the scene to crime and reform schools, reflecting how reformers and the press of the day often viewed these children as a problem to be corrected.
