Anita Zahn is the dancer named in this picture, shown as a student at the Elizabeth Duncan School, which taught the movement ideas of Elizabeth's sister, Isadora Duncan. Those ideas rejected rigid ballet technique in favor of natural, flowing motion, often performed barefoot in loose, Greek-inspired tunics. The photograph is by Arnold Genthe, the German-born portraitist who built his reputation photographing dancers and performers in New York and San Francisco in the early 1900s. The record gives no date, so the picture is best viewed as part of that broader movement in modern dance.
