The south face and portico of the Department of the Interior building in Washington, D.C., stand out for their Doric colonnade, a plain Greek Revival choice that set the tone for much of the city's federal architecture. The building was constructed in the 1850s and 1860s, a period when Washington was still taking shape as a national capital. This salted paper print comes from an album kept by Benjamin Brown French, who oversaw federal building projects in the city, and it preserves an early view of the structure before its surroundings changed.
