Few American buildings appeared in print as often as the U.S. Capitol, and this hand-colored lithograph shows the seat of Congress in the decades before its construction was complete. Charles Bulfinch's domed center, finished in the 1820s, stood between wings that had been rebuilt after the British burned the city in 1814 and were enlarged through the 1850s. Nathaniel Currier issued views like this from his New York shop, selling affordable colored sheets to a public eager to see the nation's landmarks. The print captures a capital that was still growing into its design.
