A set of working drawings for the cupola roof of the United States Capitol is preserved in this salted paper print. Captain W.B. Franklin of the Topographical Engineers prepared the plans, elevations, sections, and construction details, while architect Thomas U. Walter designed the building's cast-iron dome. Salted paper was a mid-nineteenth-century process used to copy architectural drawings, and the dome's ironwork, built during the 1860s, was a major engineering undertaking for the Capitol.
