Rather than a view of the building itself, this is a salted paper print copying a set of engineering drawings showing the main ribs and exterior brackets of the Capitol dome. The sheet is labeled with the names of Captain W.B. Franklin of the Topographical Engineers and Thomas U. Walter, the architect. The dome was rebuilt in cast and wrought iron during the 1850s and 1860s, replacing the earlier masonry design with a lighter structure that could carry a much larger profile. Its metalwork rests on the same rib and bracket system these plans document, which makes the sheet a useful record of how the engineers planned the dome's skeleton.
