Rather than a view of the building itself, this print reproduces the working drawings for the cupola roof of the Capitol's dome, showing plan, elevations, sections, and details. The drawings were prepared under Thomas U. Walter, the architect of the Capitol, with W. B. Franklin, a captain of engineers, as the top engineer for the dome. Made as a salted paper print in the 1860s, the set documents the cast-iron dome's construction during the years it was rising over the building, which was finished during the Civil War. The sheet's dimensions and notations give a sense of how precisely the engineers planned each part of the structure.
