This is a salted paper photoprint, a copy of an architectural drawing made in July 1860. It shows the ceilings of the attic story of the connecting corridors in the United States Capitol extension. Captain W.B. Franklin of the Topographical Engineers, who was in charge of the work, and architect Thomas U. Walter signed the original plan. Salted paper was an early photographic process, and institutions used it to make inexpensive copies of working drawings like this one, which the engineers needed for building and record-keeping. The sheet reflects the wartime-era construction of the expanded Capitol, when the building's new wings and corridors were still taking shape.
