This picture shows the ceiling of the House of Representatives in the south wing extension of the U.S. Capitol, drawn as a reflected plan so the design could be read in its mirrored form. Architect Thomas U. Walter led the Capitol's enlargement in the 1850s, and Captain Montgomery C. Meigs of the Army Corps of Engineers took charge of the construction in 1853. The House began meeting in its new south wing chamber in 1857, and the ceiling was one of the interior features recorded during that period. The print is a salted paper photograph, an early process that let engineers and architects copy drawings for their records.
