Rather than a view of the building as it stood, this is an architectural drawing of the east face of the south wing, prepared by Thomas U. Walter and dated September 1851. Congress had outgrown the original 1800 building, so Walter was given the work of enlarging the Capitol, and the new north and south wings were begun that summer. The sheet survives as a salted paper photoprint, an early process in which paper coated with silver chloride recorded the architect's design in the new photographic medium of the 1850s.
