Rather than a view of the building, this sheet reproduces working drawings of the Capitol's cast-iron dome, showing the main ribs and the exterior brackets that carried them. Thomas U. Walter designed the dome, and Captain W.B. Franklin of the Army's Topographical Engineers oversaw its construction, so the set reflects the engineering office's detailed planning. Built during the 1850s and 1860s as the Capitol was enlarged, the dome relied on iron framing that demanded precise drawings for fabrication. Salt-paper prints like this one were a common way to reproduce such plans for builders and officials.
