Rather than a view of the finished building, this print reproduces a set of architectural drawings: elevations, a section, and plans of the second story of the Capitol dome, marked as scaled and dimensioned. Thomas U. Walter, the architect who oversaw the Capitol's expansion and designed its cast-iron dome, produced such sheets while the dome was under construction in the 1850s and 1860s. Salted paper prints were a common way to make inexpensive copies of architectural drawings, so the image preserves the design intent rather than the structure as it stood. Its windows and ornamental details document the decorative choices behind the dome's upper stories.
