The drawing shows the south gateway to the Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C., a point of entry that gets far less attention than the building's east front and dome. It dates to 1839, when the Capitol was still unfinished. Work on the building had begun in the 1790s, and the grounds around it were gradually being shaped into a formal landscape of walks, gates and fencing. Drawings like this one record the setting as the young capital was taking form, and they show how the approaches to the national legislature were understood in the years before the Civil War.
