Three women stand at the card catalog in the Main Reading Room of the Library of Congress, the wooden cabinets and rows of small drawers that once served as the building's index to its holdings. The photograph is credited to Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that made thousands of pictures of government offices, officials and public buildings, and it is dated only to the years between 1930 and 1950. The Main Reading Room, opened in 1897 in the Thomas Jefferson Building, was among the most celebrated public spaces in the capital, and the catalog it shows was how readers located books before computerized search replaced it.
