Five people are at work in what the record tentatively identifies as a reading room of the Library of Congress, and the uncertain attribution is worth keeping in mind. The date range runs from 1897, the year the library's Main Building (now the Thomas Jefferson Building) opened, to 1926. The building's large reading rooms, with their tall windows and ornate interiors, were designed to hold a growing public collection and a staff that had outgrown its earlier quarters in the Capitol. Pictures like this one show how the library's work looked in its first decades in the new building.
