A working model for Bela Lyon Pratt's figure of Science, later carved in granite for the Library of Congress, is the subject here, a rare view of a sculptor's plan before it was enlarged in stone. The Library was rising on Capitol Hill at Ten First Street Southeast during the years 1886 to 1897, and its exterior and interior were crowded with sculpture meant to present learning as a civic virtue. Seeing the model shows how Pratt worked out the figure's pose and proportions before the final version was cut. The caption information on the original card has not been fully verified, so the exact date and circumstances of the photograph are worth checking against other sources.
