Published in Harper's Monthly in the early 1870s, this wood engraving shows the Law Library, the legal collection kept within the Library of Congress when it was housed in the U.S. Capitol in Washington. The Library's holdings suffered a severe loss in the Capitol fire of 1851, which led to a rebuilding of its rooms and shelving. Magazine engravings like this one gave readers a view of government spaces most of them would never enter, and they remain useful records of how such reading rooms were arranged in that period.
