The photogravure shows the old Supreme Court room in the north wing of the United States Capitol, a space the justices used for their sessions before the Court moved out of the building's north wing in 1860. By 1900, when this plate appeared, the room held the Supreme Court Law Library. It is plate 94 in Glenn Brown's *History of the United States Capitol*, published the same year, and it documents how the Capitol's interiors had changed as the government and its archives grew. Photogravure was a costly reproduction method, so the plate shows the room's shelving and furnishings in fine detail.
