Few gardens of the interwar years carry as much social history as this one, shown with a reflecting pool, garden statuary, and the house rising in the background on the estate of Evalyn Walsh McLean. Born in 1886 to a Colorado mining fortune, McLean became one of Washington's best-known hostesses, and her estate, called Friendship, hosted many lavish gatherings. She was also the owner of the Hope Diamond, whose reputation for misfortune drew press attention throughout her life. The photograph, dated between 1920 and 1950, offers a formal view of a landscape arranged to be seen from the house and to impress visitors.
