Unlike most pictures of this kind, this one shows a Black man standing on the porch of a modest Georgia house, with the building itself as much the subject as the man. It comes from an album of photographs of Black life in Georgia that W.E.B. Du Bois compiled around 1899 and 1900, when he was working with Atlanta University. The series was assembled for the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, where it was meant to show American audiences and European visitors the lives, homes, and work of Black Georgians at the turn of the century. The porch and house give a sense of the everyday domestic setting that the project set out to document.
