Its horizontal log walls and thatched roof mark it as a rural dwelling rather than a town building. The izba, a log house with a straw or reed roof, was the common home of Russian peasants and changed little over generations. Around 1918, the Russian Revolution and civil war were reshaping land and village life across the countryside, though the record says nothing about this particular house. The catalog uses the name Soviet Union, which the country did not take until 1922.
