Carpenter's picture shows a large rock in Kowloon City that the record calls the Rock of King Sung, a name tied to Sung Wong Toi, the site where legend holds that the young last rulers of the Southern Song dynasty paused during their flight from the Mongol advance in the late 1270s. The print was made by Mee Fong Studio, a Hong Kong studio, and it entered the Library of Congress through the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection. Carpenter's travel photographs often mixed scenic and historic sites for American readers, so the rock here is worth noticing as both a landmark and a piece of local memory.
