Vasco da Gama's meeting with the Samorin of Calicut is the moment this print depicts, with the Portuguese explorer delivering a letter from King Manuel of Portugal. Calicut, now Kozhikode on India's Malabar Coast, was a major trading port, and da Gama's arrival there in 1498 opened direct sea contact between Portugal and India. Because the record classifies the picture as conjectural, the scene was imagined by an artist, probably long after the event, rather than drawn from life. It reflects how turn-of-the-century viewers pictured the age of exploration as much as it records the encounter itself.
