King Gustav V of Sweden, who reigned from 1907 to 1950, presents the awards to the 1929 Nobel laureates in this group portrait. Alfred Nobel's bequest had funded the prizes since their first award in 1901, and the ceremony in Stockholm each December, held on the anniversary of Nobel's death, was a major public event for the Swedish court. Among the 1929 honorees was novelist Thomas Mann, whose literature prize drew wide attention. The photograph captures the formal ritual that tied the Swedish crown to the prize's public life.
