Few rulers of the late seventeenth century carried as much weight as the figure in this portrait, William III, Prince of Orange, born in The Hague on November 4, 1650. As stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, he led the 1688 expedition that drove James II from the English throne, and he then ruled alongside his wife, Mary II, as joint monarch. This hand-colored lithograph was issued by the New York firm Currier & Ives, which between 1856 and 1907 produced many portraits of historical figures for an American public that enjoyed images of European rulers and national heroes.
